The Psychology Behind Quality Sex:
Anima & Animus
Today I want to talk to you about Anima and Animus. I'm sure you've heard these concepts before. Let me explain them without boring you — and with a little scientific grounding.
In Carl Jung's school of Analytical Psychology, these two concepts are part of the collective unconscious theory and are defined as follows:
Anima: the feminine soul within the man — his inner feminine side. Animus: the masculine soul within the woman — her inner masculine side.
What shapes the Anima is the man's first bond with his mother. What shapes the Animus is the woman's first experience with her father. This is why every in-depth conversation I have with my clients eventually, at some point, touches on family and origins. Because according to Jung, the archetypes that determine our choice of partner and the way we conduct our relationships are precisely this Anima and Animus.
The Animus represents masculine energy; the Anima represents feminine energy. Every human being carries both masculine (Animus) and feminine (Anima) aspects within. A woman seeks her own Animus in her partner; a man seeks his own Anima in his. The hidden architecture behind the sexual experiences and sexual quality we talk about today is shaped by the complementary dance of these two energies.
Let me recall a very old myth that supports this knowledge. According to Aristophanes' tale in Plato's Symposium, hundreds of thousands of years ago, women and men lived as a single being — with two heads gazing at each other in love, four arms, and four legs. One day they angered Zeus, the God of Gods, so greatly that he split them in two. Each separated half searched for its other half in agony, with longing and yearning. Years later, pitying them, Apollo gave us the bodies we have today. And so, according to mythology, man and woman have been searching for their lost other half ever since.
Now that you've raised your awareness of Anima and Animus, it's time to turn this knowledge into concrete steps. With the Inner Energy Balance Scale, bring this awareness into your relationship. Discover your energy profile, see which archetype profile you carry, and integrate this balance into your life through daily practices.
Until you make the unconscious conscious,
it will direct your life, and you will call it fate. — Carl Gustav Jung
